Windrow grazing is a process by which a crop is windrowed and left in the field for grazing at a later time. By windrowing or swathing the crop in the early fall, in areas where a majority of the moisture comes seasonally in the spring and summer months, many crops will maintain their quality during the fall and winter months with minimum deterioration. These swaths can then be grazed with livestock at a later time using temporary electric fence to ration out the feed and minimize feed waste.
Windrow grazing or swath grazing can significantly reduce harvesting and feeding costs for forage to cattle enterprises as compared to feeding baled hay. These costs savings can equal clost to $40 per ton. Windrow grazing also effectively returns a majority of nutrients contained in the feed back to the ground that it was harvested from, significantly reducing subsequent fertilizer needs for future crops.
